Ukraine’s Special Resource—Grandparents

One of the main ways that AFFEO partner organizations in Ukraine give support is by coming alongside adoptive parents, guardians and foster parents throughout Ukraine.

Our partners pay special attention to elderly people who take care of their orphaned grandchildren. This care is especially needed as the war in Ukraine continues.

One of our partners recently shared with us the story of Darinka and her grandmother Valentina.

Twelve-year-old Darinka has experienced much difficulty and heartbreak in her young life. Three years ago, she lost her mother to cancer. Her father abandoned the family around the same time. Valentina, not able to even think of her granddaughter being sent away to institutional care, fought for guardianship.

Just as their situation was beginning to feel stable again, Russian troops invaded the Kharkiv region where Darinka and Valentina lived. Valentina noted, “We didn’t have the strength to be under constant shelling in Kharkiv, so we left.” Valentina and Darinka found shelter in a region about 95 miles southwest of their home. There they received psychological support and humanitarian aid, as well as prayer support from the local church community. All of the groups providing support to Valentina and Darinka are part of the Ukraine Without Orphans (UWO) alliance, an AFFEO partner.

Fortunately for Darinka, in addition to UWO‘s much-needed assistance, this sweet preteen has the love, support and care of her grandmother. Despite losing her parents and her home and experiencing so much trauma, she has a sense of security.

How we thank God for Valentina stepping up to the plate for her beloved Darinka—and for hundreds of grandparents like her across Ukraine! Won’t you join us in praying for God’s continued protection and provision for Darinka and Valentina and similar family units in Ukraine and numerous refugee sites? Please also pray for our partners who are continuing to serve vulnerable families in these areas.

And a huge thank you for the incredible role you play in helping orphaned and vulnerable children through your prayers!
